Robert J. Barnet, M.D., M.A., FACP, FACC

Dr. Barnet is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and Loyola University School of Medicine (Chicago). Following his training Dr. Barnet worked at St. Francis Mission Hospital, Solwezi, Zambia and then taught Cardiology at Loyola University Medical School in Chicago. While in Chicago he was Director of the Loyola Indigent Clinics at cook County Hospital. He practiced cardiology in Reno, Nevada from 1965 until 1993 and was Medical Reviewer for the Nevada Medical Board from 1993 until 2007.

He is past-president of The Federation of Catholic Physician Guilds and was North American Vice President of The International Federation of Catholic Medical Associations.

Dr. Barnet has a M.A. in History from the University of Nevada and an M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame. In 1993-94 he was Professor of Medical Ethics at St. Louis University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO. He was a visiting scholar at the University of Notre Dame in 1989-90 (Theology: Ethics and Health Policy) and 19961997 (Philosophy).

Dr. Barnet has been involved in medical ethics since 1982. He has lectured internationally and published more than 60 articles, on both cardiology and ethics, including on AIDS, end of life issues, human dignity, health policy and the philosophy of medicine. His current special interest includes professionalism, decision making, health care reform, malpractice and medical error and the ethical foundation of health care.
