Edmund D. Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics

The Edmund D. Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics (PCCB) at Georgetown University Medical Center was established over two decades ago in order to create a center of excellence, filling a unique need for bioethics that is directly oriented towards clinical medicine and strongly rooted in the Catholic and Jesuit tradition. In its situation at Georgetown University, it complements the activity and interests of the renowned Kennedy Institute of Ethics, the Philosophy Department and Law Center.

The faculty of the PCCB have appointments in the Medical School, Nursing School, and Graduate School. They teach, conduct research, and participate in patient care. They are responsible for bioethics education at Georgetown Medical School and in the residency programs at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital, as well as graduate medical programs locally. In addition, the PCCB provides the ethics consultation service for the hospital. The PCCB faculty are actively engaged in a wide variety of research projects, and offer further education and training through our visiting scholars program. PCCB faculty serve as consultants, volunteers, public speakers, and panelists for organizations and agencies, both private and governmental.

The Edmund D. Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics is a University-based ethics resource for those who shape and give health care. Committed to the dynamic interplay between theory and practice, experience and reflection, center scholars bring expertise in clinical practice, philosophy, theology, law and basic science to the ethical challenges that arise in the care of particular patients. An academic community dedicated to creating and communicating knowledge we seek to promote serious ethical reflection and discourse in pursuit of health care that continues the Gospel Mission of healing and growth.
